Try the Thing You’ve Been Secretly Thinking About

A lot of young creators stay in the lane they’re already good at. It feels safer there. If you’re known as the “photography person,” you stick to photography. If you make films, you keep making films. If you paint, you paint.

But some of the most interesting creators in LA are the ones who let themselves explore beyond the label.

Maybe you’re a ceramicist who keeps thinking about fashion design. Maybe you’re a filmmaker who secretly wants to compose music. Maybe you’re a visual artist who’s been curious about photography, creative coding, jewelry making, animation, or DJing, but you keep telling yourself, “I’m not really that kind of creative.”

Who says you can’t be? It’s Creative Beginnings Month, and National Creativity Day on May 30 celebrates imagination and creative exploration in all forms.

You don’t need to be amazing at something to begin. You just need enough curiosity to take the first step.

Your challenge this week: Pick one creative lane you’ve quietly wanted to explore and do one real thing toward it.

Examples:

  • Borrow or rent a camera and shoot for an afternoon
  • Download beginner music software and make your first beat
  • Take a pottery class
  • Write one scene for a film or TV pilot
  • Sketch one clothing design

No pressure to monetize it. No pressure to post it perfectly. Just begin.

Then on May 30 for National Creativity Day, share your first step with your bestie (or if you’re feeling really brave, post it to your socials). Reflect on what you tried, what surprised you, and what you learned about yourself.

Your next creative breakthrough might be hiding in the thing you’ve been nervous to try.
