It’s Financial Literacy Month, and there’s no better time than the present to be thinking about managing the money that your creative endeavors yield. Your creative hustle is real but without a clear money system, it’s easy to feel lost. You don’t need a bunch of bank accounts to get it right. You just need a plan.

Here’s the strategy: Every time you’re paid, split the money into 4 buckets (you can keep them as separate folders, spreadsheets, or even apps if you don’t have multiple accounts yet):

  • Income – what you earn
  • Taxes – set aside (roughly 20%)
  • Savings – for emergencies, future goals
  • Operating Expenses – gear, software, materials

When you track like this — even in a single account with labeled folders or color-coded spending — you’ll see the number you can use instead of the illusion of “everything in my main account.” Multiple finance guides say separating money by purpose reduces stress and keeps finances clean.

Action this week:

  1. Label or color-code four folders in your bank or CashApp for the four buckets above.
  2. Use your next payment. Divide it according to your plan (for example: 50% income, 20% taxes, 20% savings, 10% expenses).
  3. At the end of the week, check: Did you follow the splits? Adjust if needed.

When you do this, money becomes a tool that helps you feel more confident, less hectic, and more in control of your creative life.
