How to Find Your Creative People (Even If You’re Shy)

Community is the biggest cheat code in your creative career. You don’t have to show up to every big party or event in LA. You don’t need endless networking. You just need to be in spaces where people get it.

Start small.

  • Join a Discord or Slack channel in your niche (film, design, fashion, music). You don’t have to talk immediately. Just observe, react, post when ready.

Join one server this week. When you introduce yourself, keep it simple and real. For example: “Hi, I’m Riley, 21. I shoot short films in Los Angeles. I’m excited to improve my editing style and meet creators doing immersive storytelling.”

Sign up for one workshop this month. Stay after the session and follow one person on IG or Discord. So show up once. Say hi. Share your work. That’s enough to open the door to meaningful connections.

  • Use the “3-touch rule.” Creative friendships can form organically through thoughtful outreach.
    • Comment on someone’s work
    • Share a resource
    • Ask one thoughtful question

Do this three times with the same person. That’s how acquaintances become collaborators.

  • Build your own tiny circle. If you can’t find the space you want, start one. It can be as simple as a group chat, Discord thread, or a monthly Zoom. Three people is enough.

You’re not “networking” in the awkward sense. You’re building your creative tribe. You’re not looking for a crowd. You’re looking for the few people who see what you’re building and want to build too. In fact, research shows that the most supportive creative circles start when you regularly contribute and show up, not when you just collect contacts.
