For Creators With Chronic or Autoimmune Illnesses

In honor of Autoimmune Awareness Month, we’re showing some love to our chronically ill and creative friends. Your energy isn’t endless and that’s okay. You’re a young creative in LA. The pressure is loud, and the pace is fast. If you’re managing a chronic or autoimmune illness, your workflow has to protect your energy and help you create consistently.

Here are 6 tips to ensure that your workflow respects your energy as much as your art.

1. Work in short bursts.

Committing to editing the first 30 seconds of a short feels more attainable than saying you’ll simply work for 30 minutes. Try 25 minutes of focused work, then 10–15 minutes of real rest. That spacing protects you from burnout. Consistency beats overworking every time.

2. Use scheduling tools and automation like they’re your assistant.

Stop doing everything manually. Make the tech work smarter for you, not harder.

  • Google Calendar → block “Create Time”
  • Notion/Notes → capture ideas instantly
  • Later/Planoly/TikTok drafts → batch content on good days

3. Choose flexible creative roles.

Build around what your body can sustain. If you’re living with chronic or autoimmune illnesses, focus on editing, writing, digital design, community management, or content creation. Roles you can move around in based on how you feel day to day. Avoid roles that demand constant, real-time output if your energy fluctuates.

4. Rest is part of the strategy.

Rest isn’t the enemy. It’s a critical component of the system that sets you up for success, so don’t treat it like a reward. It’s a requirement.

  • Take breaks after work sessions
  • Have 1-2 low-output days weekly
  • Keep a “low-energy task list” (e.g., emails, organizing, brainstorming, etc.)

5. Simplify your process.

Maybe you chop your deliverables into 3 parts instead of 10. Maybe you pick 1 tool to master instead of 10. You deserve systems that support you, your body, and your art. Overcomplication will wear you out. Combat that by:

  • Batching content
  • Using one main tool (Canva, CapCut, etc.)
  • Cutting unnecessary steps

6. Build around your body.

Pay attention to when you feel your best and plan around that. Stop forcing routines that don’t fit your reality. Your body isn’t the obstacle. It’s part of the equation. Build your creative life with that truth at the center.

Remember, you don’t need to do everything. You need a system you can sustain. That’s how you grow without burning out.
