Bob Baker Marionette Theater Brings Puppetry to Life in LA

In the heart of Highland Park is one of LA’s most unique family entertainment institutions — Bob Baker Marionette Theater, whose mission is to preserve, educate, and innovate at the intersection of Puppetry and the Allied Arts. Named an official Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2009 (and founded in 1963), the Theater has served over 1 MILLION children with original shows ranging from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker to a musical journey through the history of Los Angeles (Hooray LA! is now playing, see it before it leaves in May).

Just this month, BBMT made its Coachella debut (read more about that here) and is actively working to purchase their forever home on York Boulevard. In May, the Theater will open its first new show in 40 years, Choo Choo Revue! A landmark moment for BBMT and a vibrant celebration of community and joy, Choo Choo Revue! will journey through rolling hills, towering mountains, and shimmering deserts, and along the way, encounter dancing suitcases, singing mushrooms, and a lively cicada jug band. The new production will feature more than 100 handcrafted, all-new puppets, brought to life with theatrical flair and remarkable artistry.

Upcoming Opportunities at Bob Baker Marionette Theater:

Mark your calendars for BBMT’s Annual Bob Baker Day, which has been rescheduled for September 20, 2026 at LA State Historic Park.
