Maye Bejar-Gutierrez, 19, is a Whittier-based filmmaker and Loyola Marymount University film student who believes the best documentaries hold up a mirror and help people see the power in their own stories. And she knows a thing or two about shooting your shot. While working at Little Caesars, Maye spotted a film crew scouting the restaurant, introduced herself, and asked if she could shadow them. That bold move landed her a Production Assistant role on her first commercial gig. Now she’s taking her storytelling international, heading to Bonn, Germany, to create a documentary while studying abroad. Her advice for young creatives? Get your reps in. Make a lot. Try everything. Stop waiting for every project to be perfect. Your voice gets clearer by actually using it.
