Standing Together: Six Months After the Fires
YMCA Palisades Malibu Executive Director

It’s been six months since wildfires swept through Altadena, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu—leaving behind devastation, heartbreak, and an urgent call to action. In the face of this crisis, communities came together with extraordinary resolve. At the Snap Foundation, we are humbled to be one of many philanthropic partners supporting the long-term recovery led by local organizations and deeply rooted community leaders.

Collective Impact: Responding to Crisis, Rebuilding With Care

Thanks to the generosity of more than 47,000 donors, the California Community Foundation’s (CCF) Wildfire Recovery Fund has raised over $100 million to provide critical support. The fund, administered by our trusted partners, enabled immediate relief efforts that ensured families had access to shelter, food, medical care, and other essential services in the aftermath of the fires.

As a philanthropic ally in this effort, the Snap Foundation joined alongside other funders to help sustain momentum and provide resources for the longer journey of recovery. That journey is now entering a crucial new phase.

A Commitment to Local-Led Recovery

The second phase of recovery—focused on rebuilding homes and infrastructure, restoring livelihoods, and addressing long-term health and displacement risks—is underway. The CCF fund committed $30 million to support this next chapter, with a focus on efforts led by community-based organizations in the areas hardest hit by the Eaton and Palisades fires.

CCF’s role is to bolster the work already happening on the ground:

  • Supporting affordable housing projects that keep communities intact
  • Backing commercial revitalization efforts to restore local economies
  • Helping rebuild nonprofit community hubs that are essential to collective healing

These investments are guided by those closest to the work—nonprofit leaders, survivors, and advocates—who bring lived experience, cultural knowledge, and deep trust within their communities.

Elevating Survivor Voices Through Partnership

One of the guiding principles of CCF’s  involvement has been to listen to survivors and act in partnership. In collaboration with Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap Inc., they co-founded the Department of Angels, an initiative focused on survivor-centered recovery.

Earlier this summer, nearly 2,000 wildfire survivors participated in a survey that shed light on the persistent challenges they face—from delayed insurance payouts to the risk of permanent displacement. These findings have become an important touchstone for ongoing grantmaking and advocacy—reinforcing what local organizations have been telling CCF all along.

Recovery With Equity at the Center

True recovery goes beyond rebuilding structures. It means investing in a future that is equitable, inclusive, and more resilient to future disasters. As a funding partner, the Snap Foundation is committed to ensuring that these values are not only reflected in our support—but driven by those leading the work on the ground.

We are honored to stand with our partners—grantees, funders, and community members alike—in a shared mission to rebuild lives and communities. The Snap Foundation is just one of many organizations dedicated to ensuring that no one is left behind on the path to recovery.
