This SNAP project is planned to help children and young adults become aware of the beauty of nature surrounding them. SNAP students take pictures of what they love and value about nature and their environment.
Students will create a comprehensive list of plants and animals that are indigenous to their region. Then they will also research “harmful” materials or actions that can destroy plant and animal life where they live.
Step 1: Other ideas
Students brainstorm what they value about nature. (ex. plants, animals, flowers, trees, insects, water, ecosystem, food chain). Make a list of these items for the students to reference in their photo shoots.
Step 2: Photography
Students will take pictures of items found on the brainstorm list and keep a journal to record what pictures were taken and why they were inspired to take each photo.
Step 3: After pictures have been taken
Students will evaluate the plant and animal life indigenous to their urban environment. They will pick one species of plant or animal and create a storyboard that shows specific information about what each does for the environment. (Where it exists, why, how typical it is, its range, etc.)
Step 4: Create plans to attend the community-wide SNAP Nature Show. Other Ideas
Option A: Students will use their photography record and brainstorm specific human behaviors that can destroy plant and animal life.
Option B: Plan a SNAP nature show in your school or classroom.
1. Invite other students, parents, teachers, etc.
2. Students can develop planning committees, create posters, write invitations, and create thank you notes for donors.
SNAP gives young people the opportunity to explore their lives through the lens of a camera, and tell their stories to the world, all the while developing the literacy skills for effective self-expression with both words and pictures.
SNAP then engages entire communities through
high-profile public exhibitions, web galleries, and publications that celebrate the students’ written and visual stories.
SNAP is committed to improving K-12 education for all young people by supplying teachers with much-needed resources that will inspire students toward a newfound love of learning!
