"Why Do We Need Snap?
Schools today are terribly under-funded, and essential programs such as arts, literacy and character enrichment are being cut at an alarming rate.
Our teachers need support from organizations outside traditional school systems to help fill these educational gaps, and to keep students engaged and involved in their own learning.
SNAP gives students the chance to explore their world through the lens of a camera, and then to tell their stories to the world. SNAP programs inspire kids toward a newfound love of learning by supplying teachers with innovative resources that motivate young people toward higher academic and personal achievement.
SNAP’s chosen approach is to use the inclusive, fun and inviting art of photography as a path to developing important written and visual literacy skills. The kids’ work engage entire communities in the educational life of the school district.
Why have we chosen this path?
Photography is a fun, simple and educationally relevant way to invite students and families to become active in the learning process. When a child takes a camera into their own hands, they are empowered to become visual storytellers, their self-confidence and critical thinking skills grow. Photography documents ideas and imaginations for a positive future. In turn, as students develop academically they become storytellers through pictures and writing.
SNAP also works with young people internationally, in regions of the world that are marked by extreme poverty, violence and war. Whether a student is documenting life in the neighborhoods of the United States, or in a small village in Uganda, we have seen the power of their stories create changes in communities. SNAP’s international program (Seeking Needed Actions for Peace), enables young people of high-stress areas to document their lives through pictures, and then promote peaceful solutions by sharing those voices and visions with the world.
As the SNAP students’ from around the country and the world see their pictures and writing exhibited at our high-profile events held locally, nationally, even globally, the students discover a new sense of purpose while receiving a clear message that their stories are heard, their lives matter!

“The words escape me for the effect of the SNAP program. For a community, and a group of young people beset with challenges, ‘possibility’ and ‘hope’ are no longer hollow words students think teachers are trained to pitch.”
